Error estimates for some quasi-interpolation operators

‖u− Ihu‖L2(T ) ≤cThT ‖∇ku‖L2(ω̃T ), ‖u− Ihu‖L2(E) ≤cEh E ‖∇ku‖L2(ω̃E). Here, k ∈ {1, 2}, Ih is some quasi-interpolation operator, T and E are a simplex and a face thereof, hT and hE measure the size of T and E, and ω̃T and ω̃E are neighbourhoods of T and E which should be as small as possible. Note that the interpolate Ihu never needs to be computed explicitely. Moreover, for problems in two and three space dimensions, one may choose for Ih the standard nodal interpolation operator if k = 2. But the case k = 1 is the most interesting one, since it does not require any additional elliptic regularity assumptions.

We derive sharp and explicit upper bounds for possibly weighted Poincaré constants of finite element stars. The latter are star-shaped domains that consist of a finite number of nonoverlapping simplices or parallelepipeds which all share a common vertex. Bounds for Poincaré constants are needed in deriving error estimates for quasi-interpolation operators and a posteriori upper bounds.
